ORDER OF SERVICE/HYMNS

April 5, 2026 Easter Sunday
St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church
Cathy Clark leading Worship

Prelude

Words of Welcome

Call to Worship:

One: Alleluia! Christ is risen! The world is forever changed.
All: Alleluia! Christ is risen! We are forever changed.
One: We need not fear, for the God of the covenant promises to be with us through every change.
All: May we always be open to new ways of living, relating, serving and seeing.

Assurance:

One: May the God of life remind us that death never has the final say.
All: May the risen Christ prove to us that violence and hatred will never win.
One: May the Holy Spirit, our advocate, lead us to advocate for others.
All: May we go boldly forward to live out the love, justice and hope that Easter proclaims.

Introit: Alleluia, Alleluia, Give Thanks, BP #260

Refrain: Alleluia, alleluia, give thanks to the risen Lord.
Alleluia, alleluia, give praise to his Name.

Jesus is Lord of all the earth.
He is the King of creation.

Refrain

Spread the good news o'er all the earth:
Jesus has died and has risen.

Refrain

Opening Prayers

Hymn: Jesus Christ is Risen Today, BP # 243
Jesus Christ is risen today, hallelujah!
our triumphant holy day, hallelujah!
who did once upon the cross, hallelujah!
suffer to redeem our loss. Hallelujah!
Hymns of praise then let us sing, hallelujah!
unto Christ, our heavenly King, hallelujah!
who endured the cross and grave, hallelujah!
sinners to redeem and save. Hallelujah!
But the pains which he endured, hallelujah!
our salvation have procured; hallelujah!
now above the sky he's King, hallelujah!
where the angels ever sing. Hallelujah!
Sing we to our God above, hallelujah!
praise eternal as his love; hallelujah!
praise him, all ye heav'nly host, hallelujah!
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Hallelujah!
Passing the Peace

A Word for All Ages
Hymn: Hey Now, Singing Hallelujah

Chorus
     Hey now, singing hallelujah
Hey now, the morning has come
     Hey now, singing hallelujah
The tomb was empty at the rising sun

Jesus loved people and He made them friends
Hey now, the tomb was empty
He called to the children and the women and men
Hey now, the tomb was empty
Chorus

Jesus healed people and he helped them be well.
Hey now, the tomb was empty.
He taught about God in the stories he’d tell.
Hey now, the tomb was empty.

Chorus

Jesus loves people and he lives again!
Hey now, the tomb was empty.
Calls us disciples and he calls us his friends.
Hey now, the tomb was empty.

Chorus

Prayer for Understanding
Scripture: John 20: 1- 18, read by Mike Davidson

Word in Music: Let the Trumpet Sound

Reflection: Regifting

Hymn: Because He Lives

God sent His son, they called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal, and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Refrain
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, All fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives.
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

Refrain

And then one day I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain.
And then as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives.

Refrain

Prayers for the World

Invitation to the Offering

Doxology - melody of old 100th

I know that my Redeemer lives
What comfort this sweet sentence gives!
He lives, he lives, who once was dead,
He lives, my everlasting Head.

Prayer over the Gifts

The Sacrament of Holy Communion & Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Invitation:  Jesus said: “I am the bread of life.
Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty….anyone who comes to me I will never drive away.”

As we prepare to celebrate the joyful feast together as the family of God, know this:

            This is not a Presbyterian table; not a St Mark’s table;
            This is Jesus’ table.

Therefore, anyone who trusts Jesus as their Lord is welcome to participate, anyone who trusts in him.

Communion Hymn: In Christ Alone, #52 SB

In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all –
here in the love of Christ I stand.

There in the ground His body lay,
light of the world by darkness slain.
Then bursting forth in glorious day,
up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me;
for I am His and He is mine –
bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death
This is the pow’r of Christ in me.
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man,
can ever pluck me from His hand;
‘till He returns or calls me home
Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Minister:       The Lord be with you.
All:                  And also with you.
Minister:       Lift up your hearts.
All:                  We lift them up to the Lord.
Minister:       Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All:                  It is right to give God thanks and praise.

God of all majesty, Creator of all that is, we praise you for we are, each and every one of us, made in your image.
Lord, you who have given us breath, have also given us liberty in Christ Jesus because we are your precious children, destined to be joint heirs with him in your heavenly kingdom.  We worship and adore you.
You weave together the bright and dark threads of lives into vivid tapestries drawing us ever closer to you.  You hold our futures in the gentle palm of your hand and we love you.
We come to you now that you may nourish our souls, that you may wash us clean, that we who hunger and thirst to know you more may find all that we seek in you.

Minister: We cannot fully comprehend the perfect covenant of love you have made with us, sealed by the blood of the Lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ,
ALL:    Who by living, loves beyond measure
Who by dying, sets us free
Who in death, carried our sins from us
And who in rising gives us life and hope and joy, abundant and free.

Minister: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might.  Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
ALL: Hosanna in the highest.

And so God, Creator of the galaxies, we honour you, we offer you unbroken praise for you are the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, the very source of our lives.  You created us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, to give ourselves completely to your service.  We find ourselves now at the foot of the cross where we stand in awe of your radiance and we rejoice, Lord, for you fill all things with your blessings.  Multitudes of saints stand before you at the throne of grace, believers who have died and those yet to be born, beholding the glory of your presence.

Minister: We join with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we proclaim the mystery of the faith:
ALL:  Christ has died.  Christ is Risen.  Christ will come again.
And so it is with humble hearts we pray;

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and these gifts of bread and wine,
That they may be for us the Communion of the body and blood of Christ.

And now, to the only God our Saviour, we pray with the words that Jesus himself taught us to pray together,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
Forever and ever.  Amen.

Breaking of the Bread
The Lord Jesus, on the night of his arrest, took bread,
And after giving thanks to God, he broke it and said,
“This is my body, which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”

In the same way, he took the cup after supper, saying,
“This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood.
Whenever you drink it, do it in remembrance of me”.
And as St. Paul tells us:
“Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup,
You proclaim the Lord’s death, until he comes”.

The Communion
These are the gifts of God, for the people of God. Thanks be to God!
Prayer of Consecration
Let us pray.
Holy God, giver of life, you prepared a table before us, led us to it, and fed us abundantly. Lord, in deep gratitude for this moment, this meal, and these people we give ourselves to you.  Heal us, strengthen us with courage and take us out to live as changed people because we have shared the living bread and cannot remain the same.  Ask much of us, expect much from us, enable much by us, encourage many through us.  May we always respond to you with hearts made ready, eyes made open, hands made strong and feet made willing to do your will in this place and in all the places to which you call us. Send us out, Lord, with tender-heartedness to touch an ordinary world with the promise of your love.  In the perfect name of Jesus, we pray.  Amen.

Benediction

Sung Benediction: melody of Come to Us Beloved Stranger, lyrics by Carolyn Winfree Gillette

Listen, sisters! Listen, brothers
To the news that we proclaim;
Spread the word and tell your neighbors:
We have life in Jesus' name.
All because God loves us dearly,
Jesus died for all our sin.
On the third day, God showed clearly:
Love has conquered, death can't win.
